The cable should be replaced when it is worn or frayed, or when the gearshifter fails to function properly. If the shifter cable is broken or twisted, it will be difficult to operate the vehicle and you will need to park the car until repairs can be made.
Removing the Clutch Cable
To remove a clutch cable from a YAMAHA vehicle, use a wrench or a small screwdriver to unscrew the adjusting sleeve locknut and turn the cable counterclockwise until the tension is relieved. The sleeve is located beneath the clutch release lever.
Installation
On later versions of this cable, replacement self-adjusting cables come with a holding strap that relieves the spring tension and allows easy installation. A helper may be needed during this process, so wear work gloves and a long-sleeved shirt or jacket to avoid chafing.
Adjusting the Throttle Cable
If the throttle cable requires adjustment, remove the retaining clip from the bracket atop the cylinder head cover and reposition the grommet. Then reinstall the retaining clip in a different groove to tighten or loosen the cable.
Route the new cable into the cable access hole on the lateral side of the shifter. Insert a ferrule and the cable-housing into this exit, and seat it firmly. Pull the cable out of the cable fixing bolt, out of the cable-routing on the underside of the bottom-bracket, and through the barrel adjuster near the headset.
